Step by Step Training

• Get a hoop that your dog can reach without too much strain.


• Teach your dog to fetch and hold the ball in their mouth. The ball must fit well. I have several balls that look like basketballs and they are well for photos. However, my dog likes tennis balls best. Teach your dog with a ball they like to use and it will be easier.


• As your dog brings the ball to you  direct them to the hoop. Teach your dog to bring the ball to the hoop. I actually got down on my hands and knees and showed Patches what to do. She then would take the ball to the hoop but that was about it.


• When your dog gets up to the hoop with the ball in their mouth you will probably have to direct them to the hoop rim, at that point force the ball out of their mouth. Now continue this until you teach your dog this trick several times.. Treat them each time. Give lots of praise and they will continue to do well.

Train Your Dog How to Dunk A Basketball!

• Once your dog has accomplished the smaller hoop find one that they can reach up and put their paws on. Teach your dog to come to the hoop first.


• Again let them come to the hoop and take the ball from them, make them beg for it by putting their paws on the rim of the hoop. Once they have done that give them the ball in their mouth. (Teach your dog to carry the ball in their mouth to the hoop)


• As they continue to come and you take the ball until they get to the rim on their own with the ball then you might have to force it again out of their mouth. Teach your dog to drop the ball into the hoop!!!
